An estimated 13.2 million kg of antibiotics were sold in 2009 to the U.S. poultry and livestock industries. Antibiotics are added to the feed and water of raised poultry to increase their growth rate. In 2005, the FDA has banned the use of an antibiotic called fluoroquinolones in U.S. poultry production. It's known to be used in the treatment of serious bacterial infections. Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and
Arizona State University found evidence suggesting that it's still in use. Moreover, a companion study have found arsenic in feather meal used in retail fertilizer. Exposure to high levels of arsenic can cause many health problems.
